Hi all,

This is about the group's decision to have the book study via a Yahoogroup and subsequently copy the posts here as an "archive."

Geeze!  You make going to a message board sound like making a pilgrimage to Mecca!   Wink  ,   Message boards and "listservs" such as Yahoogroups have different advantages and disadvantages.  Different people have different preferences for one or the other.  I think the advantages of each are pretty obvious.   Even though the Yahoogroup idea is mostly being superseded by message boards and the newer "social networks" such as MySpace, I doubt that Yahoogroups is going anywhere anytime soon.

I know that some message boards will e-mail users a copy of whatever is posted rather than just a notification to visit the web site.  That would solve 50% of the problem, but would still require members to visit the if they want to reply.  Manually archiving the e-mails on the message board is a great idea, the best comprehensive solution, but is a labor intensive chore that requires a dedicated archivist to commit to.  Yet the archive is probably the most important aspect as an individual book study is only a "snap shot" that has a lifespan of a month or two, and then disappears.  Maintaining the historical record, I think, is very important for a number of reasons.

During the past year, as I have had time, I have been researching (online) book study groups hoping to find a self contained, comprehensive guide that will be very specific about the basics such as what type of software or listserv or message board has proven to be best, and what types of organization and procedures work the best.  So far, no such luck!  Strange!  However, if any of you have and experience with this or are ware of the documentation I seek, please let us know.  Thanks.

I am researching to see if there is a message board out there that works by e-mail and/or by web site.  It certainly seems technologically possible.  However, you never know.  More importantly, it is important to keep in mind that the medium is only secondary; some are more preferable than others as members here have been discovering. However, without the commitment on everyone's part the make the thing work, we might just as well be scrawling message on the walls of public restrooms for all the good it does.  I hope that everyone shares with me the sense that aside form the obvious benefits of our group, we are pioneering something that could be very important to great numbers of people in future.  This could prove to be (I hope, I  hope, I hope) an important "missing link" between solitary study and going to an REBT practitioner.  Vast numbers of people may not get any mileage from the former but may not be able to take advantage of the later.

Anyway, let's see how this one goes. Y'all might want to consider starting a separate Yahoogroup; free and only takes 10 minutes to set up) to provide more integrity and sense of identity for the book study.

Thank for everyone's support and participation.

Aloha,

Rex

Hiya Rex...
I hadnt considered setting up a new yahoo group...but am hoping that using the REBT-CBT-Forum and archiving here will be useful for a lot longer than 2 months!  I have also posted the posts onto the quicktopics board that u found as another place for people to stumble upon us...possibly!  I've been told that the more exposure we get...the better!  Since we are all here to promote Dr Albert Ellis's REBT theory...getting out the word in any way possible has to be a good idea!

I am grateful that u have set this site up for us to use and I sincerely hope that as many people as possible utilize it and learn from it!

Peace & Love

Hiya Nycki, all,

You may have noticed that I have reduced some of the restrictions, and now it is only necessary to login in order to post messages, but not read them.  Hopefully, this will be less burdensome and intimidating for some of our members, and will also encourage wider membership as some people, understandably, do not want to register for something if they don't know what it is about.

However, this "may" make us more vulnerable to SPAM and other abusive posts.  I hope not, but I need everyone's help in notifying me promptly if you see abuse so that I can quickly remove it and ban the member.

Aloha,

Rex
