New Forum : Distorted thinking in the Media
Sat 19 May 07, 10:56 a.m.
Hi All,
I have created a new forum topic " Distorted thinking in the Media." It is something we can have fun with an learn a lot from . And best of all, as there is a virtually unlimited supply of examples of distorted thinking in the news, media and arts, we will never run out of material!
How does it work? Easy, just look for flagrant examples of distorted thinking, irrational beliefs (IBs) and destructive self-talk in the media. This can be either instances of the individual deluding himself or herself, or of the individual consciously or unconsciously using distortions to attempt to manipulate others. This can be either fiction or non-fiction. You will find that politicians and characters in soap opera do the later quite often.
Just post the example here. Quote as accurately as you can, be sure to cite your source for any copyrighted stuff. Either have a go at identifying disputing and replacing yourself, or present it as a challenge to the group.
"Free form" disputing is, of course, OK. But keep the intellectualizing and meanderings to a minimum. Also, of course, classic ABC techniques, "three column techniques" and other formal approaches are also encouraged.
This can be great fun and you can learn a whole lot without taking the same emotional risks of posting personal examples. It is also fascinating to discover just how much of what goes on in our society is driven by nutty, distorted thinking that people foolishly take to heart.
I have gotten the ball rolling in a separate post with the classic Brand-Steiger scene from the classic film "On The Waterfront."
Aloha,
