Here is where we start to learn the really good stuff!
Hi all..
I enjoyed the thought of the 'static' that is the distortion that depression causes. When my brother was suffering from acute depression I had many debates with him on his perception, trying to tell him that his was distorted and that this distortion was causing the negativity and blackness that is depression. We dont get to see whats real and this is why its so important to be able to 'dispute'. Since we cant rely on others to always be there and dispute with us, as I had to do with my brother since he didnt know CBT/REBT, we do NEED to know this information for ourselves, and in particular to hear the crap we feed ourselves and to be able to see exactly which distortion we are experiencing. I enjoyed this chapter not only coz it listed the distortions...but it also gives exercises that allow for us to practice what we are trying to learn. I have discovered for myself, time and time again, that I need to DO in able to really take the information/lesson in/on!
Would anyone like to share some of their more pressing 'distortions' tha they are having to work on at the moment?
How did u get on with the quiz? Do u feel confident in being able to identify the cognitive distortions that u struggle with by hearing that little voice inside of you?

Nycki,
where are we ? aren't we in chap.3
Dr.Burns lists out the ten cognitive distortions that forms the basis of our depression-wonderful of him to have prepared this list which he says is the distilled essence of many years of research and clinical experiences-as we all know these distrotions are the manifestations of undesirable core beliefs-i, think the most vital step is the pinpointing of these beliefs -understanding of these distortions in greater clarity ,iam sure will take us to that goal-

Hi Anoopkumar...
I think we are actually up to Chapter 4...which I plan to get onto in the next day or two!
I agree with you in regards to the 10 cognitive distortions. It is great that Burns and others have written lists for us to that we know wot to look out for. It does take a long time to get to really be able to 'label' the type of distortion that we are using at any given time. I find it very interesting tho to see wot it is that I am doing. I used to think that I wasnt a judgemental person...until I got myself 'attuned' to some of the comments that I was automatically making without even realizing it! :-S
How are u getting on with deciphering which ones u have the most trouble with? |

I thought we were still on Chapter three. Perhaps I’ve been asleep for a week.
My very first attempt at cognitive restructuring was a simple two column technique: nutty ideas on the left, rational rebuttals on the right. I was blown away by how effectively even this simple, inelegant method worked. I was hooked, and used the two column technique almost daily from then on.
Some time later, I discovered “Feeling Good” and learned about the 10 cognitive distortions. During the time I had been using the two column technique, I was well aware that my nutty ideas were nutty, but I wasn’t sure why. Burns’ list of distortions gave me the answer. I now knew what to look for, and immediately switched to using the three column technique. (After years of studying and teaching REBT, I’ve been able to absorb and retain more rational ways of thinking and find I no longer need to use the three column technique on a daily basis, but I still do use it from time to time, and still get very good results).
I have discovered in my own thinking – as well as in the thinking of others – an additional distortion: Dwelling on Regret. With this distortion, you think “if only…” as in “if only I’d married Camilla instead of Diana,” or “if only I hadn’t told my boss to go fuck himself,” etc. Once you start dwelling on regrets about the past, it takes only a short time before the blues arrive. You could regard this particular distortion as a “hidden should” as in “I should have married Camilla” or I shouldn’t have told my boss to…”. But it exists in the thinking of so many of us, that it probably deserves a place of its own on the list.
Regards,
Will |
