· Quote

Hi all..

I found this chapter a real eye opener!  I hadn’t done any scoring of my moods before and as Burns and others testify to the accuracy of the “Burns Depression Checklist”….and that is closely aligned with the ‘Beck Depression Inventory’, which is extensively used worldwide in diagnosis….its an interesting fact to discover about myself!  When I first did this I was a 34 which was a bit shocking!  I think this really does cement for us though, that we all tend to struggle with ‘crappy thinking’ most of the time and that is going to affect our overall level of happiness.

The new psychology today tells us that we say “I will be happy when I have/do….”, when we should really be saying that if happiness is what we wish to have as our end result…we should start there.  The idea is that u jes BE happy without needing to do or have anything to cause those feelings for yourself.  It sounds to me that since our thinking makes the difference between which mood we experience, that being happy is ours for the taking NOW!! While the new psychology says we don’t need to DO anything…my guess is that we do need to get rid of those negative/twisted thoughts that cause our grief in the first place.

Burn’s then goes on to talk about some tough cases.  Some ppl sure do have some tuff stuff to handle.  Back at the end of 2006 I took up working full-time in the acute ward of a local mental health hospital.  The scary thing was that ppl went from being locked behind two thick steel doors, to only one locked steel door and then on to an open ward all within one week!  Many ppl came and went weekly...so basically...the general population is full of ppl who have hallucinations, delusions etc.  Those who suffer from Depression also live a tortured life...and thats why its so crucial for us to ensure that we deal with it. If CBT is able to help those with the greatest challanges then we have no excuse to feel this cant work for us all!!

Its interesting to know that 'Bipolar' starts out with a Massive Depressive Episode.   Could Bipolar ever be stopped with effective CBT??

I personally believe that we all suffer from moderate or higher levels of depression at various stages of our lives.  Depression comes and goes.  Since being sad (from a negative event) is believed to be very different from being depressed, and being depressed it due to cognitive distortions...it makes sense that depression is a very common thing since we all always suffer from some level of cognitive distortion.  Being able to 'dispute' most cognitive distortions perhaps minimizes the amount of times we get so down that it actually forces us to notice its presences by its interference in our daily lives.  Sounds like a useful skill to have to me!

Do we know if Beck or Burns or Ellis ever suffered from Depression?

as i went thru this chapter did the BDC once again-its says 17-(11-25 is mild depression)- at this stage iam in the process of terminating the ssri-infact stopped taking it from yesteerday- cant really say the outcome as yet, as the effect of the drug is supposed to linger for some days-

i am a little skeptical of these tests- it is very subjective and i find it hard to choose the options- aand in my case it is the psychosomatic reactions that give me the clear clues to the state and severity of my conditions- perhaps psychosomatic reactions could also be included in the test- i have always wished for a more obejective chemical testing for depression-anyone aware of the developments in this area?
as said earlier i firmly believe that even the severest(including manic depression) will in the future be treated without drugs-i believe that the disorder is not inherited but only the suscetibility to the disorder is inherited-withan early screening and identification and on giving the appropriate learning they any one can be freed of the delibitating disorders to which they succomb.

Hello again Anoopkumar...

How are u getting on with the removal of the SSRI'S?  I dont want to sound like ur mum...but ....R U doing it under a Dr's supervision?  Was there a particular reason why u wished to come off of them?

Having only Mild Depression sounds great!  I think when I first did it mine was about 34, which I believe was moderate depression.  I didnt actually realize that that was the case until I sat and thought about possible reasons for it....then it seems pretty reasonable as a true outcome.

I hope u are feeling well and that all is going well with you!

Take care
