Hi Joshv,
Thanks for your question. Wow! You have been waiting a long time for an answer. It is taking a little longer to generate traffic on this board than I had hoped! Tell your friends. Spread the word!
CBT and REBT are very similar. I originally read Ellis and Burns (Beck) at the same time, so I tend to blur the distinctions, or find the distinctions unimportant. Will or Micah can probably explain more lucidly than I can.
However, the short answer is, as I understand it, is that REBT is more concerned with core beliefs, and persue them more aggressively nd more immediately than CBT.
For example, if you feel that people feel judgmentally toward you, CBT might have you check out the validity of that thought by asking people how they feel, and my having you confront your tendency to do "mind reading".
REBT, as I understand it, would be much more more inclined to simply accept your assumption (rational or not) that people are judging you and dispute any core distortions such as:
People must not judge me.
It's terrible and I can't stand it when people judge me.
As others judge me as "bad", then I must be a "bad person."
I feel that perhaps these distinctions are not so important, and I can see value in either one or both depending upon the circumstances.
Hope that helps.
Aloha,
Rex |
